02 Feb Paul, Shelton, Shapovalov Opening Matches Scheduled at Delray Beach Open
Doubles field stacked with defending, Grand Slam and NCAA champions and former world No. 1
DELRAY BEACH, Fla. (Feb. 1, 2023) – With opening day for the Delray Beach Open tennis tournament fewer than two weeks away, organizers have announced more opening singles match dates for marquee players and a strong doubles lineup featuring the defending champions. The main draw takes place Feb. 13-19 at the Delray Beach Stadium & Tennis Center, with the ATP Champions Tour legends event and qualifying rounds kicking off Feb. 10-12. The tournament is the first North American hard court event of the outdoor season, and one of just 10 ATP Tour events in the United States.
Australian Open quarterfinalist and reigning NCAA champion Ben Shelton will make his Delray Beach Open debut Valentine’s evening, Tuesday, Feb. 14 at 8 p.m. Shelton, 20, reached the quarterfinals in just his second Major tournament and cut his ranking in more than half to No. 43, besting his father Bryan’s career-high of No. 55. Bryan Shelton reached the Delray Beach Open quarterfinals in 1993-94 when it was held in Coral Springs and is now the University of Florida men’s tennis coach, where Ben won the NCAA title last May before turning pro.
Thursday, Feb. 16 will be a blockbuster day with Canadian Denis Shapovalov playing at 2:30 p.m. to cap off the day session; and Australian Open semifinalist Tommy Paul taking the court at 8 p.m. to complete the evening session. Shapovalov led Canada to its first ever Davis Cup title last November and reached the third round at this year’s Australian Open. Last week, Paul became the first American man to reach the Australian Open semifinals since 2009, notching wins over two seeds as well as Shelton. His success moved him into the world’s Top 20 for the first time.
